Kerala's warm, humid, coastal climate is beautiful - but tough on gold-plated and antique-finish jewellery. With a few simple habits, your pieces can look brand new for years. Here is how to protect them.
The golden rule: jewellery goes on last
Always wear jewellery after applying makeup, perfume, coconut oil, hairspray and lotion. These contain chemicals and alcohol that dull plating and accelerate tarnish.
Keep it dry - especially in Kerala
Remove jewellery before bathing, swimming, exercising or stepping out in the rain. Humidity and sweat are the fastest way to wear down a gold finish. If a piece gets wet, pat it dry immediately with a soft cloth.
Clean gently
- Wipe with a soft, dry microfibre cloth after each wear.
- Never use water, toothpaste or chemical cleaners on plated pieces.
- Use a soft, dry brush to lift dust from stone-set crevices in Palakka and Nagapadam designs.
Store each piece separately - and beat the humidity
Store every item in its own soft pouch or a lined box to prevent scratching, and add a silica gel sachet to absorb moisture. In coastal and monsoon-prone Kerala, an airtight box with silica gel makes a real difference against tarnish.
Rotate what you wear
Resting pieces between wears reduces wear on the plating and keeps your collection fresh.
